Evaluations
It is common for individuals to display delays in development and difficulties functioning in school, socially and at work. When this becomes apparent, comprehensive evaluations are used to:
- provide detailed information about the individual’s strengths and weaknesses
- identify delays
- determine clusters of symptoms that point to certain diagnoses (e.g., AD/HD, Learning Disorders, Autism Spectrum Disorder)
- assist with appropriate school and career placement
- generate constructive recommendations for clients, parents, teachers and educators to optimize the individual’s success
- provide data used to determine eligibility for Exceptional Student Education (ESE) in the school system
- provide data used to determine eligibility to receive various special services (such as accommodations, assistive technology and IEPs)
Evaluation techniques include:
- clinical interviews
- obtaining history (medical, developmental, social, educational and family history)
- obtaining observations from significant others
- questionnaires about behavior and emotional functioning
- review of previous data
- talking to important people in the client’s life
Depending on the age, presenting problems, and the concerns identified by the client, parents, school and/or physician, evaluations can involve assessment of the following components:
- cognitive intellectual functioning (thinking, reasoning and solving problems)
- academic achievement (math, reading, and written language)
- perception and processing (how information gets in visually and audibly)
- visual-motor skills
- attention and distractibility
- executive skills (planning, organizing, prioritizing and task management)
- processing speed
- language functioning
- social perception and pragmatic (social) language
- learning and memory
